Tarafdar is a surname found in West Bengal and Karnataka States of INDIA and also in some parts of Bangladesh. Historically Tarafdar is a title given by Afghan kings and was later adopted by few Indian kings.
The history of Tarafdars reminds of Turkey and Persia where the title exactly originates. In Persian, "Taraf" means "direction" and "dar" means "have" literally "to have a direction". Actually the combination means "in favor of". In Turkish it indicates someone who is a joiner of organizations.
It is said by the historians that the Tarafdars originated from Turkey and migrated from Turkey to Delhi. The Sultan of Delhi employed them as his Tax Advoisors. Tarafdars were given lands "Tarafs" to manage. The land management included collecting taxes, both normal and agricultural taxes (Lagaan). A Tarafdar maintained all the accounts and handled all the monetary/financial transactions for his land.
Due to the difference of openion between the Tarafdars and the Sultan, two tarafdars namely Mohammed Gouse I and Mohammed Gouse II left Delhi and migrated to Bahmani Kingdom in Gulbarga and settled in Hasnapur. After the division of bahmani kingdom(the kingdom got divided into four smaller ones like Barishahi (Bidar), Kutbshahi (of Golkonda), Adamshahi( of Ahmadnagar), and Adilshahi (of Bijapur)) they settled in the Adilshshi kingdom of Bijapur.
The title was a prestigious position, so descendants continued claiming it, and it turned into a surname.
I belong to the family of Tarafdars that travelled all along Turky, settled in Bijapur later travelled to Vijaynagar and settled in Ron(presently a taluk in Gadag district). The later migration to hubli was in search of good job and education!!!!

Glad you read my post.
There you go, seems like bujapur was under bahamani kingdom that declined and was taken over by mughals and hence later ruled by adil shah. :)
